National and sub-regional Spokes

AfricaLics recognises that country and sub-regional research and capacity building needs as well as economic and social development priorities may differ from those at a continental level. As such, we encourage the development of national and sub-regional AfricaLics ‘hubs’. These are mostly virtual networks that are coordinated by an individual or group of individuals at one or more universities or research institutes based in the country or sub-region. They can conduct a range of activities depending on the needs, time and commitment given by hub members. Activities include but are not limited to seminars; workshops; mentorship support etc. National and sub-regional hubs are expected to fundraise for their own activities and assist in fundraising for AfricaLics e.g. when they take on responsibility for such events. AfricaLics does not currently have funding to support activities conducted by national or sub-regional LICS, but will endeavor to fundraise for joint activities across the continent (e.g. biennial AfricaLics conferences, academies, mentoring and other joint activities as agreed by the AfricaLics Scientific Board). If you are interested in setting up a national or sub-regional AfricaLics hub, please download expression of interest form here. Note: The national and sub-regional hubs that have expressed interest informally are listed below. These will be required to make a formal application using the prescribed “expression of interest form” that will be evaluated and hopefully approved by the AfricaLics Scientific Board.

  • Nigeria: Spoke coordinator – Prof. Opeyemi Eyitayo Ayinde
  • Bukina Faso: Spoke coordinator – Dr. Natéwindé Sawadogo
  • North Africa: Spoke Coordinator/s – Prof. Abdelkader Djeflat and Dr. Samah Souleh. The North Africa Hub have recently launched “The Development, Innovation, Management and Knowledge Review (DIMS)” Journal which is bilingual and open access. It is an international scientific journal whose mission is to disseminate research results related to the question of “Strategies to promote development driven by science, technology, innovation and knowledge of the Maghreb countries” and of the South in general.
  • Ethiopia: Spoke Coordinator – Dr. Abdi Yuya
  • Ghana: Spoke Coordinator – To be confirmed

Expression of Interest (EOI)

To initiate activities and use name and logo of AfricaLics, the national and sub-regional hubs must first be approved by the ASB and submit work-plans and reports to the ASB. National and sub-regional hubs do not automatically become members of the ASB, but may be invited to participate in ASB meetings. The ASB will represent the national and sub-regional Lics in the Globelics Scientific Board.

Main criteria for approval of national or sub-regional AfricaLics hubs are:

  • Expression of interest duly filled.
  • Intent to comply with the AfricaLics overall purposes and ethics confirmed.
  • Support from host organisation specified and documented (letter of support from Dean or similar)
  • Willingness to fundraise for own activities
  • Willingness to collaborate with ASB and the AfricaLics secretariat on joint activities
