The 14th international Globelics Academy PhD School on Innovation and Development will take place in Tampere, Finland, from the 13th to 22nd of August 2019. GA2019 is organized by the Innovation Studies Group, Research Centre for Knowledge, Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (TaSTI), Faculty of Social Sciences, Tampere University.
The aim of the Globelics Academy PhD School is to support the training of PhD students from all over the world writing theses on issues related to innovation systems and development. The Academy brings together frontier researchers in innovation with PhD students from the South and the North in order to inspire and qualify their work as well as to help them to join high quality research networks in their field of research. The Globelics Academy aims at improving students’ ability to undertake theoretically informed and policy-relevant empirical work on issues related with innovation in firms and societies, and its relationship with economic development.
For two weeks, PhD students attends the academy, which features three kinds of activities: 1) lectures on the most recent developments in innovation studies, 2) round tables discussions and group work on particular issues related to innovation especially in developing countries, and 3) students presenting their own research. Additional activities include lectures by prominent practitioners, visits to some relevant innovative organizations and the “Small world” brainstorming sessions with some companies operating in the global south. Finally, the GA ends up with a farewell party on a lakeside to experience the Finnish nature and to award diplomas.
To qualify for participation, the PhD student should fulfill the following requirements:
Student selection will be based upon evaluation of 1) an extended abstract of four pages describing the student’s thesis; 2) student’s CV (max two pages); and 3) a recommendation letter from the supervisor or from another senior scholar. Abstracts (four pages) should be typed double-spaced in English. The abstract should state the objectives, methodology and data, expected results and conclusions of the work, including supporting figures and main references. If approved, students should provide their full papers no later than 14th July 2019.

The Local Secretariat will provide the accommodation for those selected. It may also cover the travel expenses for some of the students, but the applicants are encouraged to raise their own travel funding, when possible.
