SUMMARY:14th Globelics PhD academy on innovation and development
DESCRIPTION:The 14th international Globelics Academy PhD School on Innovation and Development will take place in Tampere\, Finland\, from the 13th to 22nd of August 2019. GA2019 is organized by the Innovation Studies Group\, Research Centre for Knowledge\, Science\, Technology and Innovation Studies (TaSTI)\, Faculty of Social Sciences\, Tampere University. \nThe aim of the Globelics Academy PhD School is to support the training of PhD students from all over the world writing theses on issues related to innovation systems and development. The Academy brings together frontier researchers in innovation with PhD students from the South and the North in order to inspire and qualify their work as well as to help them to join high quality research networks in their field of research. The Globelics Academy aims at improving students’ ability to undertake theoretically informed and policy-relevant empirical work on issues related with innovation in firms and societies\, and its relationship with economic development. \nFor two weeks\, PhD students attends the academy\, which features three kinds of activities: 1) lectures on the most recent developments in innovation studies\, 2) round tables discussions and group work on particular issues related to innovation especially in developing countries\, and 3) students presenting their own research. Additional activities include lectures by prominent practitioners\, visits to some relevant innovative organizations and the “Small world” brainstorming sessions with some companies operating in the global south. Finally\, the GA ends up with a farewell party on a lakeside to experience the Finnish nature and to award diplomas. \nTo qualify for participation\, the PhD student should fulfill the following requirements: \n\nHe/she is registered at a recognized degree-granting higher education institution as a doctoral candidate\nHe/she is at least about to begin his/her second year\nHis/her doctoral work focuses explicitly on issues related to innovation and development\nHe/she is able to present an original paper associated with his/her doctoral work.\n\nStudent selection will be based upon evaluation of 1) an extended abstract of four pages describing the student’s thesis; 2) student’s CV (max two pages); and 3) a recommendation letter from the supervisor or from another senior scholar. Abstracts (four pages) should be typed double-spaced in English. The abstract should state the objectives\, methodology and data\, expected results and conclusions of the work\, including supporting figures and main references. SUMMARY:16th Globelics Conference – Accra\, Ghana
DESCRIPTION:Background\n\n\n\nThe Global Network for the Economics of Learning\, Innovation\, and Competence Building Systems (GLOBELICS) is an open and diverse community of scholars working on innovation and competence building in the context of economic development. The major purpose of the network is to contribute to building capacity and create a forum for exchange worldwide in the innovation and development research field. It was conceived at the very beginning of the new millennium. Inspired by the work of Christopher Freeman and Richard Nelson\, the network was initially built on conversations among scholars in the South and in the North and developed by economists and experts in innovation systems. \nOver time\, the network has integrated expertise from a wider social science background and experts on broader aspects of development. The network comprises of more than 2000 scholars engaged in research on how innovation and competence building contribute to economic and sustainable development. The network is open and diverse in terms of disciplines\, perspectives and research tools. The Network has various events including PhD academies and Conferences. The Conference\, which is an annual event is a natural incubator for international research projects and a meeting place where project groups with worldwide participation meet\, present and coordinate their research work. The Conference brings together over 300 leading and young scholars from all over the world and aims at building research capacity and orienting research toward the local challenges of the host country. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Globelics International Conference 2018\n\nThe 16th Globelics Conference will be held in Accra\, Ghana\, hosted by the CSIR-Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (STEPRI) at Mensvic Grand Hotel in collaboration with Africalics.\n\n\nGhana is the fourth African country after South Africa\, Senegal and Ethiopia to host the GLOBELICS annual Conference. This presents an opportunity to showcase Ghana\, a politically stable country\, which is currently undergoing a number of transformations to modernise its economy and create jobs. There is a government agenda to create an industry in every district to generate jobs and improve livelihoods especially in the rural areas. The output of the Conference is expected to contribute immensely to the options of the government in achieving this flagship project dubbed “one district one factory”. \nThe conference will combine plenary sessions\, presentations of research papers in parallel tracks\, thematic panel sessions\, special sessions\, poster presentations\, symposia and exhibition on industrial research in Ghana and Africa\, as well as innovative start-ups presentations\, sightseeing and cultural tours. \n\n\n\n\n\nConference Theme\n\n\n\nThe main Conference theme for Globlelics 2018 is Innovation\, Economic Growth and SustainableDevelopment: Strengthening Institutions for Greater Relevance\, Effectiveness and Inclusivity. \nThe conference invites papers addressing the role of different types of actors such as the State\, local or traditional authorities\, global networks\, universities and research institutions\, private sector\, non-governmental organisations / civil society organisations and media in generating innovation\, building capacity and strengthening institutions for sustainable development and inclusive growth. SUMMARY:Writeshop and grants management workshop
DESCRIPTION:The first AfricaLics Write-shop and Grants Management Workshop took place on 24th – 28th August 2015 at the Institute for Economic Research on Innovation (IERI)\, Pretoria. The main aim of the workshop was to develop skills on how to write a paper for publication in a journal through a collaborative process. Six papers collaboratively written by seed funded project members were intensively discussed\, focusing on the Titles\, Abstracts\, theory\, literature review and the structure of the papers. The grant management workshop took place on the last day where experiences on the projects were shared and generally on grant management systems.

SUMMARY:Research Partnership Building Workshop – Maputo\, Mozambique
DESCRIPTION:The first research partnerships building workshop under the African Network for the Economics of Learning\, Innovation\, and Competence Building Systems (AfricaLics) was held at Hotel Cardoso\, Maputo\, Mozambique from 2-3 December 2013. \nThe purpose of this workshop was to bring together researchers from the innovation and development community and provide a space for creative thinking concerning new research projects or research dissemination projects in this area in Africa. \nThe workshop was a follow up to an initial meeting of academics studying innovation and development held in Dar es Salaam\, Tanzania in December 2012 where there was agreement that research was lacking in a number of subject areas which are essential to the development of African economies and livelihoods. \nThe Maputo workshop was held as a means to start a programme of work that would reduce the research gaps in some\, if not all\, of the above subject areas. The workshop used a series of group work activities to bring out research ideas and potential activities that could be carried out by a group of researchers within and around each thematic research area.

SUMMARY:2nd PhD Academy- Emerging Innovation systems for development and Innovation Management in Africa
DESCRIPTION:The second AfricaLics PhD academy was conducted from the 20th to the 31st October 2013. The purpose of the Academy was to support the training of African Ph.D. students engage in research on innovations and technology systems to develop and stimulate their policy awareness and management issues related to their fields of research. This second Academy brought together 19 students from 14 countries and 11 instructors. It targeted mainly French speaking countries in Africa. The academy was opened with an inaugural colloquium with participation of researchers\, students and policy makers. The training was delivered via lectures\, seminars\, round table discussions and critical review of students’ research by fellow students and senior scholars. The different sessions were structured in a way to encourage active discussion among participants in order to enhance their critical thinking about African Contemporary issues.
